OMA Old Moore's Almanac 2026

For more than 250 years, Old Moore’s Almanac has been woven into the fabric of Irish life, serving as far more than a simple calendar or weather guide. This remarkable publication, which first appeared in 1764, represents a unique thread in Ireland’s cultural tapestry—a connection between practicality and prophecy, rural tradition and national identity.

Old Moore’s Almanac 2026: A Window to Everyday Irish Life

What made Old Moore’s Almanac so essential to generations of Irish people was its practical utility in an era when information was scarce and newspapers a luxury. By 1940, circulation had reached 200,000 copies, with even more sold “in every part of the globe whither Irishmen have gone”. The almanac supplied, in cheap and handy form, much information of everyday service to the farmer and rural worker, as well as to many town-dwellers.

The publication became so beloved that travelling pedlars often carried bundles of the recently issued almanacs under their arms, knowing they could obtain bed and board from those they visited, thanks to the welcome given to Old Moore in the countryside.

Cultural Significance Beyond the Pages

Old Moore’s Almanac offers historians and cultural scholars a fascinating glimpse into Irish rural life before modern communications transformed society. In an era when most country cabins contained only a prayer book and perhaps a chapbook, the almanac served as an essential reference, trusted companion, and even conversation starter. Its listings of fairs and markets, weather predictions, and astronomical information made it indispensable to agricultural communities.

Today, historical copies of the almanac are preserved in the National Library of Ireland in Dublin, where they can be studied in the reading rooms. Additional copies are housed in the Marsh Library and Trinity College’s Old Library, alongside treasures like the Book of Kells. These archives serve as valuable primary sources for understanding Irish social history and rural life during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Old Moore’s Almanac 2026

What’s remarkable about Old Moore’s Almanac is that it continues to thrive in the twenty-first century. While its mystical predictions still garner attention, the publication has evolved to remain relevant to contemporary Irish readers. The almanac was relaunched in full color in 2010, and though its heart remains rural, it now sells well in urban centers like Dublin, Galway, Limerick, and Cork.

Theophilus Moore is now buried in the Drumcondra Churchyard in Dublin, but the tradition of Old Moore’s Almanac continues unbroken to this day. This continuity, spanning from the era of Catholic persecution through independence, modernisation, and into the digital age, makes Old Moore’s Almanac more than just a publication. It is a living testament to Irish resilience, tradition, and the enduring appeal of connecting with both the practical and the mystical aspects of life.
