Former UFC champion Conor McGregor has officially declared his intention to run for President of Ireland. If we look back to the 2022 Old Moore’s Almanac, we can find Old Moore’s prediction of McGregor’s turn to politics.

In the 2022 almanac, Old Moore made the prediction that Conor McGregor would enter the world of politics within the coming years, describing it as a delicate entry to “test the waters”. As OId Moore predicted, we have seen McGregor consider and discuss possibly running for president the last few years. Flash forward to 2025, we have McGregor actively publicising his desire to enter the world of Irish politics

McGregor’s announcement came via social media, where he posted a heartfelt message alongside a photo of his family. He called on the Irish people and diaspora to support his bid.
McGregor, 37, stated that the current nomination process for presidential candidates is too restrictive. Under Irish law, a candidate must be nominated by either 20 members of the Oireachtas (Ireland’s national parliament) or four county councils. McGregor argues that this system limits democratic participation. He has launched a petition titled “Let the People Decide” to advocate for reform.
As of early August, the petition had gathered over 11,000 signatures. Yet, it remains unclear how many of those are from eligible Irish voters. McGregor has not yet secured the necessary nominations, and political experts suggest his chances of appearing on the ballot are slim.

The role of President in Ireland is largely ceremonial. The responsibilities include signing bills into law, representing the country abroad, and acting as a moral figurehead. McGregor, who has no prior political experience, has promised to bring “strength and prosperity” to the nation. Though so far, he has not released a formal campaign platform.

His announcement follows a series of high-profile appearances. This includes a visit to the White House in March, where he met with U.S. President Donald Trump. McGregor has also voiced opinions on various national issues, including immigration and economic reform. However, he remains unaffiliated with any political party.
While reactions have ranged from enthusiastic support to sharp criticism, McGregor’s bid has undeniably sparked conversation. Whether he makes it onto the ballot or not, his entry into the political arena has added a dose of celebrity flair to Ireland’s upcoming presidential race.
