TRUCK RACING IN KILDARE

So who can honestly say they have hung out in Ireland watching truck races? Well now you can.

Truck races are occasionally held at Mondello Park is Ireland’s only international motorsport venue located in County Kildare.

Last weekend, the competitors were British racing trucks who not only roared (and I mean ROARED) around the tracks, they also competed in a number of demonstration races and hell-braking competitions. These 1,100hp monsters put all their power down on the weekend.

There are no regular Irish Truck Racing competitors but last weekend, an Irish guest driver entered, former Irish Rallycross Champion Tommy Graham. He hails from Prosperous in Kildare and gave the Brits and their big rigs a run for their money.

The trucks also put on drifting displays around a particularly hairy bend in the circuit although I got the feeling that it was unintentional… but it was hell fun to watch.

And when the trucks weren’t roaring around the tracks, a souped-up car demo was taking place by Irish drifting drivers and brothers Dave and Brian Egan. Most of their tyres were left on the track in the shape of doughnuts. Mmmm doughnuts.

And especially exciting for the kids – the truck displays. Trucks opened their doors for kids and adults to clamber the hell through them. I took about 678 selfies of me driving the big rigs. It was super sweet and on my Facebook page I now look very hard.

Truck racing has happened sporadically over the last ten years however after a successful year in 2013, they decided to go ahead with an event in 2014. And I have to say it was a great family day out and seriously good value.
