Thanks to an Omega Block, it seems Old Moore’s prediction of a spicy-weathered 2025 is coming true! Old Moore has had a bumper year of prediction hits in 2025, and it’s not even halfway through the year yet!
So the latest prediction seems to really hit the nail on the head. And it’s thanks to the jetstream having a bit of a wobble. Anyway, who is down for some swimming in Wicklow waters and popping out for a 99 ice cream, which is now actually 5 euro these days?

A prediction in the “Ireland” section of the 2025 edition of Old Moore’s Almanac.
Ireland is experiencing a warm, dry, and unusually sunny May, with temperatures today hitting 22°C in Dublin under clear skies. This weather is due to an “Omega block,” a high-pressure system north of Ireland shaping the jet stream into a pattern resembling the Greek letter omega. This is according to climatologist Paul Moore.
What’s Causing the Fine Weather?
The Omega block, formed by a weakened jet stream, has kept low-pressure systems at bay, delivering mostly dry conditions this spring. Despite a wet spell from April 13-25, high pressure has dominated, with record warmth in late April at Athenry, Co. Galway. Today’s sunshine follows yesterday’s scattered showers in Munster.

A prediction in the “weather bar” of the 2025 edition of Old Moore’s Almanac.
Omega Block: Why Is This Happening?
The early breakdown of the Stratospheric Polar Vortex on March 9, over a month earlier than average, weakened the North Atlantic jet stream, fostering persistent high-pressure systems. Four stations, including Malin Head, report their warmest spring on record, with 15 stations hitting record-high mean maximum temperatures.
What’s Next?
Met Éireann’s outlook suggests above-average temperatures for June to August. Farmers face challenges with ongoing dry conditions, with seven stations reporting climatological droughts. Warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures could lead to a warm summer, similar to 2023’s marine heatwave.
Well lads, cancel that Ryan Air flight to Mallorca, toasty Irish beaches is where it’s at this year!
