Share

Every year, our in-house psychic shares some of his predictions with our online audience, and below are the ones he shared for 2020. Now that we’re nearing the end of the year, we’re looking back to see which ones came to pass – and which ones to watch out for!

Facebook and Google will be hit with fines and penalties in anti-trust investigations.

It looks like Facebook and Google will indeed face fines and penalties. In November, the Wall Street Journal reported that multiple lawsuits will be filed against Facebook and Google in the coming weeks.

This time last year, many pundits were excited by the prospect of Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders winning the nomination, but our guy called it right when he predicted Biden.

In November, southern Italy was hit by flooding after 450mm of rain fell in forty-eight hours. Two hundred people were rescued and the regional government declared a state of emergency.

Nothing on this yet, but our guy says watch this space.

Despite calls for his impeachment from many quarters this year, the Brazilian leader has managed to avoid his day in court.

In November, researchers at Samsung announced they have developed a holographic display capable of displaying 3D videos. They expect to be able to make it thin enough to incorporate into a smartphone in a relatively short timeframe.

Thawing permafrost in the Arctic and Siberia will be huge news this year

The Guardian, The BBC, National Geographic and Sky News were just some of the major news organisations reporting on this worrying trend in 2020.

New discoveries about dark matter are on the way

In June, physicists reported they may have found a new dark matter particle, but more research is needed to confirm the results. And separately, in September, NASA announced that astronomers have discovered a possible missing component of dark matter.

Trouble on the border between North Korea and China

In January, North Korea closed its border with China in an effort to keep coronavirus out of the country. The border has remained shut, with China even warning its citizens to stay clear of the border area or risk being shot by North Korean guards.

In October, after SpaceX had delayed some launches due to mechanical issues, CEO Elon Musk tweeted that he was going to Cape Canaveral to conduct a broad review of operations. Later in October, NASA announced that SpaceX’s flight to the International Space Station would be delayed by a couple of weeks to allow the company time to fix a problem with the first stage of a booster rocket during a recent launch.

Soon we will have a universal flu vaccine that protects against all strains of the virus

Nothing yet, but again, our psychic says watch this space. He expects some news on this in 2021.

And the rest…

Full disclosure – here’s the rest of our psychic’s online predictions for 2020, the ones that haven’t come to pass this year:

  • Poor crop yields in the USA
  • A CRISPR treatment for an inherited condition will cause controversy
  • A simple screening test to identify people at risk of developing dementia is on the way
  • A high profile sexual assault case will make the news at home

As for our magazine predictions…

You won’t find our full range of predictions online as they appear exclusively in our magazine. But for the curious among you, here’s a selection of predictions from the 2020 Almanac that came true:

  • “An unusual virus has people worried” – we hardly need to say anymore about this one.
  • “More and more people will work from home” – hmmmm, see above.
  • A global recession is coming – both the IMF and OECD project a global recession for 2020 due to coronavirus shutdowns.
  • Trump will not serve a second term, but he doesn’t go quietly – when our psychic made this prediction last year, many expected Trump to secure a second term.
  • Problems for 5G. Issues with the technology will generate an unexpected backlash – in 2020, fears around the health effects of 5G were exploited by conspiracy theorists who linked Covid19 with the new tech. 5G towers were vandalised all over the world.
  • “Death of a Hollywood icon”RIP Kirk Douglas
  • “A baby for Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom”Perry gave birth to a beautiful baby girl earlier this year.
  • “Angela Merkel’s replacement is not set in stone, a new successor will emerge” – AKK, as Merkel’s intended successor is known in Germany, announced in February that she was standing down.
  • “Tensions in the Middle East reach breaking point. As Iran flexes its muscles, Trump makes a bad situation worse” – it seems like a very long time ago, but the killing of Qasem Soleimani on January 3rd caused major tension between Iran and the U.S.
  • A plane crash in Europe makes the headlines – in January, Ukrainian flight PS752 was mistakenly shot down by the Iranian military, killing 176 people.
  • Financial problems for Johnny Depp – the actor owes millions after losing his libel case and will no longer star in ‘Fantastic Beasts’.
  • An information war is coming, with fake video and audio so convincing we won’t know what to believe. Governments step up the fight against online hate speech and misinformation there was a 20-fold increase in fake videos this year, while news mentions of misinformation and disinformation increased dramatically. Facebook, Twitter and Google have joined a coalition of governments to fight misinformation around Covid vaccinations.
  • Further scandal for Prince Andrew and the Royal Family – following on from 2019’s revelations about the Prince’s association with Jeffrey Epstein, we learnt this year that he faces legal proceedings over a £5m debt, his charitable trust made unlawful payments to a former trustee, and his break from royal duties became permanent.

Remember, our full range of predictions never appear online. So, if you want to get the inside scoop for 2021, the new edition of Old Moore’s Almanac is on sale here and in newsagents across the country. Of course, it’s also packed with our usual quirky collection of articles and horoscopes for the year ahead, so you get plenty of bang for your buck.
