Book Returned to Clare Library After 29-Year Loan

You know those dudes… the ones who borrow books and never return them. Mostly because they can’t be bothered. Or because they have died. Or something.

Well one dude from County Clare borrowed a book about former US President Abraham Lincoln in 1987. And it just got returned the other day. And not even by the dude who borrowed it (who probably really did die.)

Known for his honesty, Abraham Lincoln was called “Honest Abe.” Legend has it that he used to run a country store, and on one occasion, late at night, as he counted over his cash, he realised that he had taken more money from a customer more than was due. So Honest Abe closed the store, and walked a long distance to pay back the money.

On another occasion, it is said that Lincoln was measuring out tea for a shopper, and realised after she had paid and left, that he hadn’t given her enough tea. So again he fronted up at her house with the missing tea. These days that would be considered stalking… I mean seriously, keep your damn tea dude.

‘Honest Abe’ would not have been impressed by the failure of the Clare County Library member to return the book after almost three decades.

A volunteer from a local charity shop returned the book to Shannon Library after identifying it as library property when going through a pile of donated items.

The maximum fine imposed by Clare County Library for an overdue book is €7.50. So even if this dude is dead, he doesn’t leave a whole lot of debt behind.

‘Makers of History; Abraham Lincoln’ was first published by Collins, St James’s Place, London, in 1965.

So a note to you all out there with overdue library books: be careful or bounty hunters wanting to claim the €7.50 could be after you.
